About Me

Oboe lessons with Stella can be informative, inspiring, encouraging and fun. The unique skill set that develops through learning to play the oboe has many transferable benefits to general education, mental functioning, and co-ordination. With many years of teaching experience, in London, the home counties and as a guest professor at the Royal Academy of Music and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Stella has a unique ability to empower and inspire players of all stages and ages to develop their potential to the full.

Stella’s approach to oboe playing and her contribution to the oboe repertoire is internationally recognised. In particular, since having given workshops for the International Double Reed Society (IDRS) Conference when this took place in the UK, having previously performed at the IDRS Convention in Baton Rouge, USA

Whilst studying at the Royal Academy of Music, Stella was a winner of the Harold Craxton Chamber Music Prize plus many other awards. Her experience encompasses the full range of styles from Baroque to crossover Jazz. As a renowned teacher she has mentored many oboists towards successful careers. Former pupils include Helen Powell. (English National Opera) and music scholar Miles Russell College of Music.

Oboe lessons with Stella are tailored to individual needs, she can help you to resolve playing problems such as posture and performance anxieties, whilst keeping the focus on the meaning and interpretation of the music, alongside a pragmatic and supportive approach to all aspects of technique.

Having played for some great Conductors, (starting with Sir Simon Rattle who is a peer from Royal Academy days) Stella has the performing experience to prepare students for orchestra auditions having played the full range of orchestral repertoire herself-from classical and romantic to contemporary and -the Avant garde. A leading session and orchestral musician throughout the 1980's -1990's Stella has since extended her skills as an academic, published author and researcher.

Her recording portfolio includes many orchestral CDs; the oboe identity jingles for Classic FM, incidental music for film and TV and for many television commercials. And the highly acclaimed CD: 'Love's Lore’ *4-star reviewed in the Independent) available on all streaming platforms.

Her approach to oboe playing consultations and workshops in Lancashire is pragmatic, supportive, developmental, holistic, creative, imaginative and philosophical.
